Here are some suggestions to assist you in your selection!
Make sure you get it in writing! Ask the DJ to provide you with a written agreement with the Date, Start and End Times for the performance and when they will arrive on site to set up.
It should also include the equipment necessary for the DJ to provide (ie Microphone). Diarize to follow up a month before and a week before to make sure there are no misunderstandings
Make sure the DJ has the genre of music required for the show, and that it from a legal source. Are they licensed or a member of a DJ Association? Are they Insured if anything happens?
Ask to see them perform Live. Get a sense of their Stage presence and Microphone Control.
Possible responses…
1) All my events are private. I cannot have you there.
2) I don’t have any events coming up for a while.
3) Sure, no problem. I have these events coming up in the next month. Which would you like to come to?
If they respond with #1…what is the solution for that problem?
If they respond with #2… should you be relying on someone who doesn’t have experience to do your event.
How cooperative are they and how well are they at problem solving?
Ask them what a balanced audio system is?
Most inexperience DJ’s think a balanced audio system is one where the two speakers have an equal amount of sound coming out of each. This is incorrect.
A balanced audio system is one that uses XLR or Balanced TRS ¼” cabling. This type of cabling will eliminate most noise coming from cell phones, bad electricity or other types of interference. It provides better sound and you can run cables for a very long distance without any loss of sound or interference.
Perimeter Speakers: What are they and why would they be important?
Having your DJ come to the venue before and event is important for them to decide what kind of equipment should be used. The shape of the room, multi-room events, in-house systems are all something that should be discussed and decided on ahead of time. Although DJ’s should ALWAYS carry back-up equipment, they shouldn’t be surprised with needing additional cables or speakers.
Does the DJ have a network of people that he can use for a
